Artist Biography

Juan Navarro is a modern dance artist who uses movement as a means of honoring mentors who thought him in his adolescence. In grade school Navarro began taking dance classes through his school district. As a formative young dancer he received the opportunity to train at Dallas Black Dance Theatre for two summers, and take classes from choreographers like April Berry and Jennifer Archibald. In his senior year of high school, along with Ethan Ferris, he broke barriers as being one half of the duo, first ever male students, to be a part of the school’s traditionally all-girl drill team.

In 2019 he received his Associate of Arts degree from Mountain View College. Navarro performed with the Mountain View Dance Company, under the direction of John Merrifield. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Dance Studies from Texas Woman’s University in 2022. At Texas Woman’s University Navarro was part of “Dance Makers” ,a showcase of faculty selected works, in which he was able to work with various choreographers. In his final semester Navarro created a solo that grapples with the pressures of identity and the way his Mexican culture affects the idea of his own identity. The solo was selected for “Dance Up-close”, another faculty selected showcase of student works.

After graduation Navarro choreographed a duet piece for Mountain View Colleges annual fall showcase. He also formed part of Jordan Fuchs Dance Company in Denton, Texas where he worked alongside company members in creating improvised work that would become choreographed movement for a stage performance.
